Redruth Gaol, built in 1856, was South Australia’s first purpose-built gaol and a stark symbol of the hardships faced during the colonial era. Originally designed to house local offenders and vagrants from the booming mining township, its stone walls and cramped cells reflect the strict discipline and tough conditions of the time. Once converted into a girls’ reformatory in later years, the site carries layered stories of isolation, punishment, and resilience. Today, Redruth Gaol stands weathered but proud, offering a powerful glimpse into Burra’s early social history and the lives shaped within its unforgiving walls.
